How to Get to Hydra from Athens

To get to Hydra Island from Athens you'll need to take a ferry from Piraeus Port. Piraeus Port is about a 20 minute Uber ride from the city centre.

⚠️ Once you're at the port, confirm where your boat will dock at the ticket booth of your ferry company - the gate listed on our ticket was wrong.

Our experience with Alpha Lines vs. Hellenic Seaways

We rode Alpha Lines on the way there and Hellenic Seaways on the way back. Hellenic Seaways is a larger, more established company, while Alpha Lines is newer.

Our favourite was Alpha Lines because upgrading to business class was just 2 euros and choosing seats was simple. There is also a cute cafe where you can order drinks to your seats.

With Hellenic Seaways it cost more to upgrade our seats and we could not figure out how to choose our seats, it just randomly selected them for us.

If you get seasick easily, an advantage of Hellenic Seaways is that their boats are bigger.

✔️ Top Tip: Reserve your ferry tickets in advance, especially in summer, to secure a spot on the direct route. The trip takes around 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20 minutes.
