If you're going to splurge on one thing in Athens, make it the airport transfer to the city centre. We took the train on the way in and Uber on the way back, and the extra cost for Uber was worth every penny.
What it was like taking the train
It's a long 35 minute wait between trains at the airport, and unlucky for us when we arrived it was a 30 minute wait in the heat for the next one.
Just when we thought we were on our way, we lost service near the centre and realized we had to switch lines. I managed to recall the line’s English name, but with everything in the Greek alphabet, navigating the station felt like a puzzle and dragging suitcases through the July heat made it even worse.
The train took us 1.5 hours to reach our hotel with the wait times. In hindsight, an Uber would’ve saved us time, stress, and a lot of sweat! It cost us 9 euros each (18 euros total) for the train, but looking back, we wished we just paid the 45 euros for the 40-minute Uber.
Most convenient option
An easy option is to book a private driver through Welcome Pickups. Your driver will meet you at the airport arrivals with a sign and the cost is close in price to Uber. Plus, the company partners with local drivers who speak English.Enjoy your trip to Athens!
